I confess to be somewhat puzzled by the statements made by leaders of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association and Willamette Egg Farms in Saturday's Associated Press article regarding Oregon legislation to curtail antibiotic overuse on farm animals.

Today was the first public hearing on House Bill 2598, which would stop the overuse of antibiotics on farm animals in Oregon. We expect a similar bill in the Senate, SB 920, to have a hearing in a few weeks. As expected, we are already seeing some of what opponents of will be saying.

Doctors, nurses and farmers support legislation to curtail antibiotics overuse in Oregon

With leading medical authorities warning that public health is threatened by a “post-antibiotic future”, a panel of state lawmakers received testimony today from organizations representing Oregon doctors, nurses, farmers and consumers in support of legislation [pdf] to curtail the overuse of these critical medicines on Oregon farm animals. If the proposed bill is approved by lawmakers, Oregon would become the first state to act on this matter.

Legislature has chance to prevent antibiotic overuse

When my husband and I started Kookoolan Farms in Yamhill 10 years ago, we made the choice to raise our cows, pigs, chickens and lambs without added antibiotics, except when they are sick, just as we use them for our human family members. Our decision was in contrast to a practice common on factory farms, where healthy animals are continuously fed antibiotics to make them grow bigger faster and to compensate for unsanitary conditions.

McDonald’s announces plan to cut overuse of antibiotics in chicken

McDonald’s announced a new policy today to curb the overuse of antibiotics in raising the chickens that ultimately become McNuggets or other McDonald’s products. Within two years, farming operations supplying McDonald’s USA restaurants will not be allowed to use medically important antibiotics on their chickens, a practice that is now commonplace, even when animals are healthy. The announcement comes as Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill to make Oregon the first state to curtail the overuse of antibiotics on farm animals in the state.

Prescription For Change

Our September 2014 survey of physicians paints a grim picture of the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant infections. The overwhelming majority of surveyed doctors reported that one or more of their patients had been diagnosed with a presumed or confirmed case of a multi-drug resistant bacterial infection in the past twelve months. They also expressed concern about the use of antibiotics in livestock production facilities on healthy animals in order to promote growth and prevent disease.
